How MMA weight classes work

MMA divides fighters by weight so that size and strength are as even as possible. Under the Unified Rules used by the UFC and most regulated promotions, each division has an upper limit. A fighter must weigh no more than that limit at the official weigh-in, which usually takes place the day before the fight. The finder above takes your current weight and tells you which division you would fall into, plus the divisions on either side.

The standard men's UFC limits are flyweight 125 lb (56.7 kg), bantamweight 135 lb (61.2 kg), featherweight 145 lb (65.8 kg), lightweight 155 lb (70.3 kg), welterweight 170 lb (77.1 kg), middleweight 185 lb (83.9 kg), light heavyweight 205 lb (93.0 kg) and heavyweight 265 lb (120.2 kg). The women's divisions in the UFC are strawweight at 115 lb (52.2 kg), flyweight at 125 lb, bantamweight at 135 lb and featherweight at 145 lb.

Your walk-around weight is not your fight weight

The number on the scale at the weigh-in is not the weight a fighter carries on fight night. Most professionals walk around several pounds above their division limit, cut weight for the scale, then rehydrate and refuel before the fight. That is why the finder shows your nearest division rather than promising a perfect fit. A person who walks around at 185 lb could compete at 170 lb with a careful cut, or at 185 lb with no cut at all, and the right choice depends on frame, muscle and recovery.

A note on weight cutting

Weight cutting means deliberately lowering body weight, mostly through water manipulation, to make a division limit. Done aggressively, it can cause dehydration, dizziness, poor performance and in worst cases serious medical problems. Athletic commissions and promotions have added rules such as hydration testing and earlier weigh-ins to reduce the risk. If you are a beginner, do not cut weight on your own. Talk to a coach and a doctor, and treat this tool as an education aid, not a diet plan. For the full picture, read MMA weight classes explained.

UFC, ONE and other promotions

Not every promotion uses the same names or limits. ONE Championship, for example, uses different divisional names and, in some divisions, different weight limits, and it publishes them in kilograms. Regional promotions may use catchweights, which are custom limits agreed for a single fight. The finder shows ONE Championship limits as a reference, but you should always confirm the current limits with the promotion or commission running your event, because divisions are occasionally added or changed.

Using the results

If your weight sits close below a limit, you are at the top of that division, which is common among fighters who cut. If it sits just above a limit, you are at the bottom of the next one, and moving up may be easier than cutting down. Heavier fighters are not automatically better, so a smaller fighter at the bottom of a division is often the one with the speed advantage. To see how real fighters in each division compare on reach and height, open the fighter comparison tool.

Why limits are in pounds and kilograms

American promotions publish limits in pounds, while most of the world uses kilograms. The conversions in this tool are rounded to one decimal place. A small rounding difference does not matter in practice because official scales decide the result on the day. If you travel to fight, check which unit the commission uses so there is no confusion at the scale.

This tool provides general information only. It is not medical advice, and it is not affiliated with the UFC, ONE Championship or any athletic commission.
